The granny square is the heart of crochet — and this blanket is a love letter to it. Each square is just five rounds, and you join them as you go, so there’s no mountain of seaming at the end.

The granny square

Work each round in a new color, or keep it simple with two colors.

  1. Round 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 2, 3 dc in ring, ch 2 3 times. Sl st to top of ch-3. (12 dc, 4 ch-2 corners)
  2. Round 2: Sl st to the first corner space. Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same space — corner made. Ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner, ch 1 around. Join.
  3. Round 3: Corners as before; along each side work (3 dc) in each ch-1 space, separated by ch 1. Join.
  4. Round 4: Repeat Round 3 — each side gains one 3-dc cluster.
  5. Round 5: Repeat Round 3. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Granny squares laid out before joining

Joining as you go

  1. First square: Complete all 5 rounds as written.
  2. Next squares: Work Rounds 1–4. On Round 5, when you reach a corner that touches the finished square, ch 1, sl st into the neighbor’s corner space, ch 1, then continue.
  3. Along the joined side: Replace each ch-1 with a sl st into the matching space of the neighboring square.

  1. Round 1: Join cream in any corner. Work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner and 3 dc in each space along the sides.
  2. Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, working 3 sc in each corner. Join and fasten off.
  • Block lightly with steam for crisp corners.
  • Weave ends in as you go — your future self will thank you!
